October Heatmap: Where to Eat Right Now

View as Map

134111232008_10_hasmaps%20%283%29%20%281%29.jpg The weather may soon be cooking down, but the dining scene is heating up, and with restaurant openings all over the place, it's definitely time for an up to date Eater Heatmap.

Unlike that more stable of standbys, the Eater 38, the Heatmap aims to be more current as it catches wind of the newest, most popular places to eat and drink each month, and October's map is full of newbies and some old standbys with new tricks.

This month's map features some of Detroit's newest spots like Detroit Vegan Soul and Hamtramck's (revolver). Birmingham and Ferndale rep the suburbs with newcomers The Stand Gastro Bistro and Public House, and two restaurants from August's list upped their game and made it on again.

Had a less-than happy experience at one of these places? Been somewhere else that feels worthy of high praise and popular approval? Drop us a note on our tipline or leave your thoughts below. We know you will.

The Stand Gastro Bistro

The Stand may be new, but chef Paul Grosz, chef/owner of Detroit's Cuisine, is bringing seasonal and local carnivore, vegetarian, and even vegan fare to Birmingham, and he's doing it in a bold way. [Photo]

Public House

People won't stop talking about Ferndale's newest classic with an edge restaurant and bar serving up new takes on comfort food and lots and lots of booze, including grown-up milkshakes. [Photo]
With recent rave reviews from both Hour Detroit and the Detroit Free Press, it's clear that Torino's tasting menu continues to earn this Ferndale restaurant a spot on the list of hottest places to eat right now.[Photo]

The Dakota Inn-Rathskeller

It's 80 years old and a classic, but the solid German fare, copious amounts of beer, and German drinking songs (chicken hat required) are getting new love. Well deserved Dakota Inn. [Photo]

Rock City Eatery

This Hamtramck dinner spot may be new, but they're already earning a following for more than just their awesome pies. Diners love the low-key vibe and creative comfort food, served with a lot of soul and no pretension. [Photo]

(revolver)

Hamtramck's on the map again with Revolver, a concept restaurant featuring communal tables, local ingredients, and a rotating cast of chefs who never serve the same meal twice. This reservation only spot is currently open on Friday and Saturday nights with limited seating, and dinners sell out fast. [Photo]

Detroit Vegan Soul

This healthy take on soul food opened with a big party, and they're staking their claim as both a favorite for vegans and vegetarians and those who just love Southern food alike.[Photo]

Cliff Bell's

It's a Detroit classic that's been around forever, but their recent participation in Restaurant Week garnered good reviews, and chef Matt Baldridge is rolling out a new dinner menu to prove that Cliff Bell's is way more than a bar. [Photo]

Ottava Via

Now officially open, Ottava Via is still getting good press, most recently from Molly Abraham herself. Their pizzas are their claim to fame, but classic and delicious Italian favorites that won't break the bank are setting them apart from the competition. [Photo]

Mercury Burger & Bar

This place is always busy, but their appearance on Chuck Eats the Street on the Cooking Channel is a clear sign that Mercury is staking its claim as a Michigan Avenue heavyweight.[Photo]
