Detroit And Metro Detroit's Iconic Pizzerias

View as Map

Sure, Chicago and NYC are great pizza towns, but how about a little bit of love for Detroit? Detroit style deep dish pizza is a Michigan classic, and it's so good that other cities are even catching on (our friends at Eater Austin write about Via 313, a Detroit style pizza place all the time).

We're also the birthplace of many a major pizza chain, love them or hate them. Little Caesars, Jet's, Dominos, and Hungry Howie's all got their start in and around Detroit, not to mention Buddy's and Shield's.

So here are 15 of the most iconic pizzerias in Detroit and Metro Detroit, including Detroit style pizza, Neopolitan thin crust, "traditional" pizza, pizza by the slice, and everything in between. Did we leave off one of your favorites? Make your case in the comments and we'll include it on a future map.

It's not that cheap, and it's not authentic NYC pizza (this is Birmingham MI after all), but they do thin crust by the slice or by the pie, and they do it well. Slices are warmed up in the oven before they're served, which gets the crust nice and hot and the cheese nice and gooey. [Photo]

Farmington, MI 48334

1480 Michigan Ave
Detroit, MI 48216

The baby of the group, Ottava Via hasn't been around for a full year just yet, but they do Italian pizza in a contemporary Italian setting (no Chianti bottles here) and the rest of the menu is great for those who don't love a pizza. They're here to represent the new guard, and to show that there's always room for another good neighborhood pizza option. [Photo]
