December Heatmap: Where to Eat Right Now

View as Map

The holidays are here, and a few new places have opened up while others are stepping up their game. Unlike that more stable of standbys, the Eater 38, the Heatmap aims to be more current as it catches wind of the newest, most popular places to eat and drink each month, and December's map is full of newbies and some old standbys with new tricks.

December's map features Detroit's newest restaurants and eateries, including The Grille Midtown, Mo Better Blues, and Detroit Institute of Bagels. Rock City Eatery and Public House have stayed on the list as their chefs are both participating in the first sold-out Young Guns Dinner and the second, and there are some others who have also managed to keep their spots for the end of the year.

Had a less-than happy experience at one of these places? Been somewhere else that feels worthy of high praise and popular approval? Drop us a note on our tipline or leave your thoughts below. We know you will.

The Stand is keeping it interesting with a brand new lunch menu. The chef, Paul Grosz, is still getting great reviews and the Birmingham restaurant features seasonal and local carnivore, vegetarian, and even vegan fare on both their dinner and lunch menus. [Photo]

Chef Brennan Calnin is one of the Young Guns participating in the sold out dinner at The Root. He was also popular vote winner for the 2013 Eater Awards, proving that he's doing something right at Ferndale's classic with an edge restaurant and bar. [Photo]
With recent rave reviews from both Hour Detroit and the Detroit Free Press, it's clear that Torino's tasting menu continues to earn this Ferndale restaurant a spot on the list of hottest places to eat right now. The Restaurant Of The Year rumors sure aren't hurting either.[Photo]

This Hamtramck hotspot is keeping relevant, chef Nikita Santches is one of the "Young Guns" featured at The Root's sold-out dinner, and they just pitched in and raised money to save Hamtown Farms. Diners appreciate the low-key vibe and creative comfort food, served with a lot of soul and no pretension. [Photo]

The Grille At Midtown

It's brand new, but Midtown's newest restaurant is The Garden Theater's neighbor, serving American cuisine and adding just one more place to grab dinner and a drink, with automobile themed decor to set it apart. [Photo]

Mo Better Blues

Downtown's Grand Circus Park area has a new restaurant at Adams and Park, and Mo Better Blues is trying to cover all their bases with food, drinks, TVs (to cover sports events) and plans for live entertainment and bottle service. [Photo]

Detroit Institute of Bagels

It's been anticipated for ages, and on Thanksgiving date Detroit Institute of Bagels has finally opened. Corktown's bagel place is more than just a bake shop. With a bright and modern interior, books for reading, and an expansive bagel sandwich selection, DIB is here to stay.[Photo]
