There’s really never been a better time to be a coffee drinker in Detroit than now. The city is flooded with an abundance of great third wave cafes roasting their own beans and community shops offering comfortable atmospheres with excellent local roasts. With an ever increasing array of spots to fuel up on caffeine — be it a latte or a cup of tea — it’s sometimes hard choose the best spots. Below find a guide to some of Detroit's finest cafes for spring 2022 below Eight Mile.

Brothers Jason and James Edwards tapped their love of coffee, experiences managing cafes, and dream of owning a business together to found Public Square. The opening, at the former location of Always Brewing and Town Hall Caffé, means Grandmont Rosedale once again has a coffee shop, complete with WiFi. Pastries and baked goods are sourced from Avalon Bakery, and Clawson-based Sabbath Coffee Roasters provides the coffee.

Unluckily this cafe, bar, and community space landed just around the time the pandemic hit in 2020. Luckily, this didn’t seem to matter much to locals in Boston Edison and Virginia Park who came out to support the business in droves, enjoying the expansive patio and deck area and the roomy, high-ceilinged space inside a restored 1920s church. The Congregation is an any-occasion type spot where you can get a charcuterie board and a bottle of Beaujolais with friends or a veggie sandwich and a cold brew while reading a book.

6. The Gathering Coffee Co.

Another Milwaukee Junction edition, the Gathering Coffee Co. is a neighborhood cafe with a soft spot for film photographers. Emily Steffen, a Bay City Populace Coffee alum, combined both her passions with the opening of her espresso bar in the summer of 2020. In addition to the usual suspects, the menu features options like the Bee Sting, an ice espresso with tonic water, honey, and cayenne. Purchase some film from the fridge.

Woodbridge has its very own coffee house hangout in Bikes and Coffee. As its name implies the shop caters to cyclists in need of repairs and new builds, but there’s also plenty of coffee and espresso made with Hyperion beans from Ypsilanti. In addition to the drinks, the cafe carries pastries, bagels, and other snacks for fueling up.

The interior has a saloon feel with a mirrored back bar, antique metal light fixtures, and a mounted moose head on the wall. Located in a spot literally “down under” a building in downtown’s Financial District, Coffee Down Under is pouring coffee brewed with Australian roaster Proud Mary’s beans. Walter Pat’s Bakery supplies snacks including hand pies. In the evening, the cafe space is a false entrance to modern speakeasy Shelby.

Rochester-based roaster Dessert Oasis continues to pour great coffee and espresso drinks at its sprawling, industrial cafe in downtown's Capitol Park area. This third wave cafe has all the typical pour overs as well as freshly baked cakes and cheesecakes. With locations in Ferndale, West Village, and the Detroit Greenway, Red Hook has gained a wide following. The shops use beans from a rotating selection of roasters and also happen to brew a very tasty chai. What really sets Red Hook apart from the pack, though, is its bakery arm which keeps each shop supplied with a wide selection of sweet and savory pastries. Seating at the West Village location is somewhat limited, but that only adds the intimate neighborhood cafe vibe.
