This Rosedale community coffee pays homage to co-owner Charity Dean’s great-grandmother, Rosa Malone, among the first Black individuals to move to the area in the 1970s. The pastel pink and green decor is complemented with coffee beans sourced from Fast Haus Coffee Roasting Co. and a small variety of pastries and sandwiches. The space is also frequently used to host community meetings. Prior to opening in 2022, Dean and co-owner Heather Zygmontowicz embarked on a resident engagement process to determine the needs of the surrounding area.

Traditional Yemeni coffee is continuing to expand its presence in metro Detroit with the opening of a Midtown location of Haraz Coffee House, the Dearborn-based chain that features a variety speciality espresso drinks like the saffron latte, teas like the Adeni chai, and pastries like the milk cake made with saffron and rose milk. Several locations are already dotted throughout the region. The growing chain will also soon add a spot at the Wayne State University campus early this year.

Cairo Coffee owner Monica Isaac brews beans from a rotating selection of respected roasters inside Spot Lite Detroit, a new bar, cafe, and arts venue on the east side. Drop in and grab a pour over or an espresso drink and a seat. The shop also offers cookies and other vegan treats from Fig Baking Co.

There’s a reason this drive-thru cafe in Jefferson-Chalmers always seems to have a line snaking out onto the street. Two words: Frozen coffee. Throw in a cake doughnut and a fried chicken biscuit sandwich and you’re setting yourself up for a very good morning.
