This Rosedale community coffee pays homage to co-owner Charity Dean’s great-grandmother, Rosa Malone, among the first Black individuals to move to the area in the 1970s. The pastel pink and green decor is complemented with coffee beans sourced from Fast Haus Coffee Roasting Co. and a small variety of pastries and sandwiches. The space is also frequently used to host community meetings. This pint-sized cafe connected to Kiesling is a standing room-only set up in the spirit of Italian cafe culture. The beans here are sourced from several roasters including Anthology Coffee in Eastern Market. Customers can expect classics made well like macchiatos and cortados alongside more creative options like sparkling dandelion tea.

This Corktown establishment has undergone many iterations since opening in 2018 — first as an all-day breakfast spot featuring locally-sourced ingredients. It’s since evolved as a cute bottle shop featuring biodynamic wines, cans of kombucha, a selection of gourmet snacks, and specialty coffee beverages. Red Hook already has locations in Ferndale, West Village, and the Detroit Greenway, and now it has a spot in Midtown inside the space formerly occupied by Great Lakes Coffee on Woodward at Alexandrine. A pandemic closure made way for Cafe Alto in Brush Park during spring 2021. Cafe Alto has a similar bright, polished feel to its predecessor New Order, but dials in the menu with seasonal flavors such as a five spice latte. In addition to the drinks, there are breakfast burritos and pastries.

This longtime downtown cafe previously known as Urban Bean Coffee underwent a dramatic makeover just over a year ago, including rebranding to SPKRBOX, an homage to the ownership’s ties to the city’s techno scene. In addition to offering its classic coffee drinks, breakfast burritos sourced from Evie’s Tamales, and ample people-watching opportunities from the second-story seating area, SPKRBOX has evolved to include boozy drinks. Customers can select coffee cocktails like a Francois K made with espresso, cognac, rye, sweet vermouth, and bitters or a Nervous Negroni with gin, sweet vermouth, Campari, and a coffee reduction — perfect for afternoon chill sessions or to help catch that late-night second wind. A bonus, the basement has been fashioned into the Orange Room — a futuristic looking underground lounge with soundproofing for crystal clear sound quality.

Located in a spot literally “down under” a building in downtown’s Financial District, Coffee Down Under is pouring coffee brewed with Australian roaster Proud Mary’s beans. Walter Pat’s Bakery supplies snacks including hand pies. In the evening, the cafe space is a false entrance to modern speakeasy Shelby.

The coffee experts from Grand Rapids-based roaster Madcap Coffee provide a full-service experience on the Farmer Street side of the Shinola Hotel complex. The primarily standing room cafe serves the typical coffee and espresso drinks as well as some rotating drink specials that mix coffee with unconventional ingredients like cola and bitters. Don’t miss Madcap’s silky smooth nitro cold brew.

Germack is known for two things: pistachios and coffee. The Eastern Market roastery offers a wide selection of wholesale beans as well as smaller packaged coffees for home brewing needs. The shop also houses a popular cafe ready to fix up a latte or hot tea.

This Eastern Market transplant is a favorite among coffee connoisseurs, with sharp house roasts and creative drinks like refreshing iced coffee tonic. This big cafe is swimming in natural light and features a patio connected to the space by garage doors for optimum airflow during the summer. In addition to single-origin coffees roasted on site, the shop serves gluten-free pastries.

Cairo Coffee owner Monica Isaac brews beans from a rotating selection of respected roasters inside Spot Lite Detroit, a new bar, cafe, and arts venue on the east side. Drop in and grab a pour over or an espresso drink and a seat. The shop also offers cookies and other vegan treats from Fig Baking Co.

This east side cafe was designed as a community space with plenty of room for coffee, lattes, and community collaboration. The Commons even features a laundromat for the neighborhood.
