The city is flooded with an abundance of great third wave cafes roasting their own beans and community shops offering comfortable atmospheres with excellent local roasts. There’s even interest growing to expand upon pop-up cafe options within the region. With an ever increasing array of spots to fuel up on caffeine — be it a latte or a cup of tea — it’s sometimes hard choose the best spots. This Rosedale community coffee pays homage to co-owner Charity Dean’s great-grandmother, Rosa Malone, among the first Black individuals to move to the area in the 1970s. Traditional Yemeni coffee is continuing to expand its presence in metro Detroit with the opening of a Midtown location of Haraz Coffee House, the Dearborn-based chain that features a variety speciality espresso drinks like the saffron latte, teas like the Adeni chai, and pastries like the milk cake made with saffron and rose milk. Several locations are already dotted throughout the region. The growing chain will also soon add a spot at the Wayne State University campus early this year.

This longtime downtown cafe previously known as Urban Bean Coffee underwent a dramatic makeover just over a year ago, including rebranding to SPKRBOX, an homage to the ownership’s ties to the city’s techno scene. In addition to offering its classic coffee drinks, breakfast burritos sourced from Evie’s Tamales, and ample people-watching opportunities from the second-story seating area, SPKRBOX has evolved to include boozy drinks. Rochester-based roaster Dessert Oasis continues to pour great coffee and espresso drinks at its sprawling, industrial cafe in downtown's Capitol Park area. This third wave cafe has all the typical pour overs as well as freshly baked cakes and cheesecakes. Visit on a weekday and find a mixture of students and working professionals filling the booths and tables.

Coffee Down Under

Located in a spot literally “down under” a building in downtown’s Financial District, Coffee Down Under is pouring coffee brewed with Australian roaster Proud Mary’s beans. Walter Pat’s Bakery supplies snacks including hand pies. In the evening, the cafe space is a false entrance to modern speakeasy Shelby.

Madcap Coffee
