The forthcoming Meijer grocery store, opening later this year on East Jefferson Avenue at Rivertown Market, includes locations of Mudgie’s Deli and coffee shop Great Lakes Coffee. The store will be run by Detroit native Marcus Reliford, who lives just three blocks away from the new market.
Unlike the department store-style Meijer, the 42,000-square-foot East Jefferson shop will feature a limited selection of produce and groceries and focus on local products, including Pietrzyk Pierogi, Ma Cohens, and Cyntsational Popcorn. According to the press release, Reliford has received more than 1,000 product submissions from local food producers for consideration, with a goal of including at least 2,000 local products on the shelves there.
In addition to groceries and household staples, Meijer on East Jefferson will also include a flower shop, fresh and prepared foods, baked goods, and an extensive alcohol section.
“I grew up on the west side of Detroit as a kid, and came back recently to help give back and contribute to my community and city,” Reliford says of returning to Detroit. “This is our first store in downtown Detroit. There’s no one who wanted this job more than me. It feels good to be home.”
