March 2

DEARBORN — Lebanese breakfast favorite Al Tayeb, which got its start as a sub shop in Garden City in 2017, has officially expanded to a second outpost in Dearborn. The restaurant has a lively diner setting with a menu featuring dishes like foul (fava beans), mshawasheh (chickpeas in tahini-based lemon-garlic sauce, and fatteh (yogurt with chickpeas). Expect a bit of a wait on busy weekends. Status: Certified open. 15010 W Warren Ave.

ROYAL OAK — Brown Iron Brewhouse opened its doors in Royal Oak in late-February in the new Beaumont at Woodward Corners development. The new location features a mix of communal-style beer hall seating and four tops. The menu features lots of beer and barbecue. Status: Certified open. 30955 Woodward Ave. Suite 510.

FERNDALE — The Ferndale Project, a new brewpub from the folks behind Eastern Market Brewing Company, settled into the former Livernois Tap space on Saturday, February 22. The brewery features coffee, a full menu (50 percent of which is vegan), and a selection of sours and low ABV beers. Status: Certified open. 567 Livernois Ave.

ROYAL OAK — Proving Grounds Coffee and Ice Cream debuted in downtown Royal Oak in January. The shop filled the former Gayles Chocolate space and is the second location for the Milford-based roaster. Status: Certified open. 417 S. Washington.

BIRMINGHAM — A vegan cheese and dessert bar called Planthropie is now serving cultured cashew white truffle cheese, chocolate truffles, and macaroni and cheese. The restaurant also features a zero-proof bar. Status: Certified open. 135 Pierce St.

CASS CORRIDOR — The comfort food slingers at Street Beet have settled down inside 3rd Street Bar with vegan dishes like fake chicken sandwiches, cashew macaroni and cheese, and supreme crunchy wraps. Status: Certified open. 4626 3rd Ave.

NEW CENTER — After a brief delay proceeding a whole lot of waiting, Jamaican Pot is now dishing up Caribbean cuisine in the Detroit One building in New Center. Status: Certified open. 3031 W Grand. (Second floor).

EASTERN MARKET — Downtown taqueria Jose’s Tacos has expanded into a second, larger location in Eastern Market. The restaurant debuted on Thursday, February 27 with a dine-in setting and a menu featuring tacos, fajitas, burritos, and more. Status: Certified open. 2510 Market St.

ROMULUS — DTW’s North Terminal now features a new outpost of Anita’s Kitchen spinoff AK Takeaway. The new location is joined by a Chick-Fil-A, a Brioche Doree, a Pei Wei Asian Restaurant. Status: Certified open. North Terminal.

BERKLEY — The latest outlet of Madison Heights favorite Green Lantern Pizza debuted in February in Berkley serving both round and square pizzas. Status: Certified open. 4033 W. 12 Mile Rd.

CLINTON TOWNSHIP — Bobcat Bonnie’s recently opened its fifth location and first in Macomb County. The new restaurant is in the Mall at Partridge Creek complex. Status: Certified open. 17330 Hall Rd.

ROCHESTER — A Belgian-style chocolate bar opened in January in Rochester. Zoet serves handmade Belgian chocolates and waffles as well as chocolate mousse and other items. Status: Certified open. 103 W Fourth St.

OAK PARK — A business called D Loft Cafe opened in Oak Park in late-January. The shop acts as a food incubator and distributes meals through delivery apps. Status: Certified open. 13710 W. Nine Mile.

FARMINGTON — Mugs Coffee and Grub opened in January serving coffee, pastries, smoothies, and sandwiches. Status: Certified open. 23303 Orchard Lake.

LIVONIA — A restaurant called the Breakfast Club (unaffiliated with a similar restaurant in Farmington Hills) has filled the former Blue Plate Diner in Livonia. It’s owned by the family behind the Breakfast Club in Brighton and Karl’s Cabin. Status: Certified open. 32610 Seven Mile Rd.

LIVONIA — A restaurant called Fins Kitchen and Bar has replaced Sweet Lorraine’s at the Detroit Marriott Livonia. Status: Certified open. 17100 N. Laurel Park Dr.

NORTHWEST DETROIT — A restaurant called Sloppy Chops recently opened on Six Mile serving lobster macaroni and cheese, bourbon glazed pork chops, and blackened chicken sandwiches. Status: Certified open. 13226 W McNichols Rd.

NOVI — A coffee and smoothie bar called Sip and Joy is now open in Novi Plaza. Status: Certified open. 41467 10 Mile Rd.

CLINTON TOWNSHIP — Detroit Axe opened its latest location in Macomb County in mid-February. The location features a bar and ax-throwing. Status: Certified open. 17420 Hall Rd Suite 151.

CASS CORRIDOR — Founders Brewing Company reopened its taproom in February following several months of closure after the brewery faced widespread public backlash. The brewery has pledged to donate its profits to local charities through 2022. Status: Certified open. 456 Charlotte St.


January 29

CORKTOWN — Detroit’s newest square pizza recruit Michigan & Trumbull opened on Wednesday, January 29. The restaurant features a rooftop patio and a dive bar aesthetic with a menu of Detroit-style pizza, fried calzones, and barbecue-flavored waffle fries. A liquor license is still in the works. Status: Certified open. 1439 W Elizabeth St.

WOODBRIDGE — There’s a new izakaya in Woodbridge. BASH Original Izakaya opened its doors on Putnam and Trumbull in early January with an extensive Japanese pub menu that includes sushi and sashimi. Status: Certified open. 5063 Trumbull Ave.

CASS CORRIDOR — Indian carryout and delivery restaurant Detroit Masala quietly opened its doors this winter in the former Cake Ambition space. The menu features options like meat samosas, tindaloo ghost pepper curry, and lamb kabobs. There’s also options like New York-style gyro plates and fried rice. Status: Certified open. 154 3rd St.

DOWNTOWN — Smoothie bowl slinger Rush Bowls is now open along the Columbia Street promenade near the Fox Theatre and Frita Batidos. Status: Certified open. 22 W Columbia St.

ROYAL OAK — Meijer’s new location at the Woodward Corners development debuted on Wednesday, January 29. The Woodward Corner Market store is sort of Meijer’s version of a bougie local chain stocked with local brands like Farm Field Table meats, a Great Lakes Coffee bar, and a sushi counter. Status: Certified open. Thirteen Mile Rd and Woodward Ave.

EASTERN MARKET — A table tennis club called Pong Detroit just set up shop inside Bert’s Warehouse. The spot features hourly table rentals and a menu with burgers, sandwiches, pizza, and more. Status: Certified open. 2739 Russell St.

DEARBORN — Taylor-based Middle Eastern restaurant Malek Al Kabob has officially expanded to a second outpost in Dearborn. Status: Soft open. 22065 Michigan Ave.

ALLEN PARK — Another Chick-fil-A recently opened in Allen Park. Status: Certified open. 3355 Fairline Dr.

DEARBORN — Indian restaurant chain Paradise Biryani Pointe opened a new outpost in Dearborn at the new Wagner Place development. The menu includes options like malai chicken kabobs, egg dum biryani, and gongura goat. Status: Certified open. 22001 Michigan Ave. Suite 130.

GARDEN CITY — The Taco Stand, a Downriver favorite based in Allen Park, debuted its newest outpost in metro Detroit on Friday, January 10. The Jalisco-style Mexican restaurant known for its campanchano tacos. This is the third location for the fast-growing restaurant group, which also runs a location in Taylor. Status: Certified open. 27505 Ford Rd.

DEARBORN — A new coffee bar and ice cream shop called Eleanor’s Cafe recently opened in West Dearborn offering items like smoothies and gelato. Status: Certified open. 22001 Michigan Ave. Suite 190.
