Detroit is gaining a new soft serve custard stand just in time for summer. The owners of Eastern Market’s Gather restaurant and Cøllect beer bar teased a new project today on Instagram. It’s heading for the recently closed Chickpea in the D walk-up window located downtown at 2 John R St. near Farmer Street.
Reached by Eater, representatives from Gather and Bedrock confirm that the walk-up ice cream window will be called Huddle. It’s aiming to open soon, though no firm date has been set.
Hummus and wrap restaurant Chickpea in the D had occupied the small walk-up window since September 2013 and vacated its original location on March 8. The restaurant owners opened a larger, indoor restaurant serving falafel wraps, bowls, and salads called ChickP last June. It’s located 110 Clifford St., not far away from the original stand.
Walk-up windows are fairly rare in Detroit, though Iggy’s Eggies currently sells breakfast sandwiches nearby out of the side of Lovers Only. It seemed it was only a matter of time before something new would Chickpea’s take its place.
Gather was one of the first restaurants in Detroit proper to catch on to the soft serve dessert trend with a rotating selection of flavors. Since then, quite a few places in the area have succumbed to the siren call of swirly frozen desserts.
Stay tuned for more updates as the project moves forward and in the meantime check out some of Detroit’s other fabulous ice cream parlours.
