New diner destined for Midtown
Restaurateur Kris Lelcaj, formerly of SavCo Hospitality in Ann Arbor, is bringing a new “high-end diner” to the Park Shelton building near the Detroit Institute of Arts, Crain’s reports. The all-day restaurant dubbed Babo is set to open in mid-June in a 1,964-square-foot space previously home to short-lived Park Shelton Pizza, Detroit Pizza Company, and Good Girls Go to Paris Crepes. Babo’s menu will include options like bolognese, chilaquiles, and eggs benedict. The news comes as other building tenants including a bra retailer moved on due to significant rent hikes. Babo will join other high-end diners landing in Detroit this year including Karl’s at the Siren Hotel.
Poletown market gets new infusion of capital
Chene Street Grocers, a small market planned for Poletown, won $5,000 for its pitch to the Michigan Good Food Fund. The market, which has been in the works since 2015, previously won a $50,000 grant through Motor City Match.
The creator of a catch phrase has died
The creator of the iconic Little Caesars tagline “Pizza, Pizza” has died. Fred Yaffe, a Detroit advertising hall of famer who worked with some of Detroit’s biggest brands including Faygo, was 86 years old when he passed away on Sunday. Yaffe’s family held a funeral on Tuesday in Southfield, according to the Detroit Free Press.
