Falafel Shop Starts Blending CBD Smoothies in Downtown Detroit

ChickP is embracing the CBD drink craze

A downtown Detroit falafel shop is boldly embracing the CBD-infused beverage craze. Clifford Street shop ChickP unveiled a new smoothie menu today that includes $5 CBD oil add-ins, WDIV reports.

The restaurant is the latest to embrace a trend in using CBD oils and CBD-spiked products in food. Ale Mary’s Beer Hall introduced a lineup of cocktails in January featuring a hemp-derived CBD soda called Sprig as a mixer. Bobcat Bonnie’s has also added four flavors of Sprig soda to its menu in recent weeks. ChickP appears to be one of the first establishment in the area to use CBD oil as a booster in its beverages. The option is marketed alongside more traditional smoothie mix-ins like flax seeds, peanut butter, chia seeds, and protein powder.

CBD is a non-psychoactive derivative of cannabis and CBD oils and other infused products have flooded the market in recent years as a pain relief remedy and anti-anxiety aid. In Michigan, CBD products were legalized for recreational use in January and the new status appears to have laid the groundwork for an onslaught of CBD-laced items on restaurant and bar menus.

While CBD may be legal in Michigan, it’s important to note that the FDA hasn’t approved CBD products. Its tenuous status as a food additive has lead to several well-publicized crackdowns over the past year. In Los Angeles, area restaurants were forced to roll back CBD menus last summer after the California Department of Public Health instituted a ban. Restaurants in New York City were likewise barred from serving CBD foods in January.

For now though, Detroit customers can relax and slurp their CBD-boosted Chunky Monkey smoothies in peace.
