Less than a year after the debut of its first location in Bloomfield Hills, fast-casual shop Kaku Sushi & Poke has successfully landed a second outpost in Birmingham. The latest location for the raw fish hub arrived on Tuesday, August 14 just a few doors down from Eli Tea Bar in the former Polpetta Meatball Cafe space at 126 S. Old Woodward Ave.
Kaku is owned by Kaku Usui and Maikue Vang. Usui has more than 20 years of restaurant experience working at sushi spots around metro Detroit including Ronin Sushi in Royal Oak. The menu at Kaku is a blend of Japanese sushi rolls and nigiri as well as Hawaiian poke — a salad prepared from sliced raw fish combined with various mix-ins such as soy sauce, sesame oil, and sliced green onion, and sometimes rice. Fast-casual restaurants have driven the poke trend farther into the mainland in recent years, although to a lesser extent in metro Detroit.
Customers can expect a similar menu to the original restaurant in Bloomfield Hills with options like spicy tuna poke, tofu salad, spicy salmon crunch rolls, eel cucumber rolls, and more. Customers can also build their own poke. Prices for the main meals range from $11 for a poke bowl up to $23 for the large-sized sushi meal with a la carte sushi starting at around $4.50.
Kaku is located at 126 S. Old Woodward Ave.; open 11:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday through Sunday.
