Coffee shop moves into Hazel Park bar
One of Chicago’s best coffee companies Dark Matter Coffee is moving into Hazel Park’s Joebar. The new coffee bar is expected to land inside the John R. restaurant on June 2, the Detroit Free Press reports. The shop — Dark Matter’s fifth location — will open inside Joebar on weekdays at 7 a.m. with espresso drinks, drip coffee, draft cold brew, and alcoholic beverages, as well as pastries made by chef and Joebar partner Rebecca LaMalfa. The cafe will remain open into the evenings when Joebar opens for dinner.
Downtown Detroit market returns for spring
The Downtown Detroit Markets are coming back on May 24 with 30 vendors including Motor City Popcorn, Le Detroit Macaron, Cool Jacks Ice Cream, Susan’s Tarts, Detroit Dough, and Detroit Marshmallow Co. The glass-enclosed market spaces will once again be anchored by a beer garden in Cadillac Square run by Central Kitchen + Bar, according to Crain’s. Likewise, Townhouse and Prime + Proper restaurateur Jeremy Sasson’s Heirloom Hospitality Group will be bringing in a rotation of local chefs to Capitol Park during a weekly farmers market series. The market will be broken up into two parts and will conclude on August 31.
Hatch Detroit returns
The Comerica Hatch Detroit Contest is returning for another year and applications are open now through July 13. The small business competition is known for helping launch some of Detroit’s most beloved and successful new businesses including Detroit Vegan Soul, Sister Pie, and Batch Brewing Company. Entrants compete for a chance to win $50,000 to open their brick-and-mortar business and receive valuable mentoring along the way.
Who doesn’t appreciate a little free caffeine? On Saturday, May 19, Bay City-based roaster Populace Coffee will be giving away free cups of coffee from 7 a.m. until noon at its new cafe in the lobby of the Siren Hotel. Local partners Sister Pie, Rose’s Fine Foods, and Gold Cash Gold will also be joining in.
