Fast food chain starts slinging halal food in Dearborn
Despite the frequent missteps of fellow chains that have claimed to offer halal food, a Sonic restaurant at 10403 Ford Rd. in Dearborn is unveiling several halal menu items in an effort to appeal to the city’s large Muslim community. The Sonic went through the process of being halal certified, WDIV reports. Halal meats are processed under guidelines prescribed by Islamic law. Halal items aren’t stored separately but will be cooked on a separate grill, according to franchisee Tom Fakih.
Woodpile is expanding in Milwaukee Junction before it even opens
The forthcoming Detroit outpost of Woodpile BBQ Shack isn’t even open yet and the restaurant is already expanding. Real estate firm Colliers International announced today in that the restaurant has leased an additional 1,060 square feet of space at 6402 Woodward Ave. in Milwaukee Junction. The added space will be devoted to a bar (something that was already part of the original plans for the restaurant), according to a release. Co-owner Scott Moloney told Eater in January that the Detroit location of Woodpile BBQ Shack would likely open sometime in the fall. A third restaurant and commissary kitchen is also headed to Madison Heights this summer.
