The laundromat experience just got much more tolerable with the opening of the Commons Detroit in the city’s Islandview neighborhood. The glorious cafe-laundry hybrid quietly opened its doors at 7900 Mack Ave. late last month following a dramatic renovation and intense community engagement process.

Guests can sip on $1 java from Populace Coffee, loose-leaf teas from Intu Tea (which is produced at Eastern Market), baked goods from Avalon, soups from GreenHouse Soups & Chili, and other food and drink options from various local vendors.

The coffee shop/coin laundry facility is an effort of the Mack Avenue Community Church Development group, a community development organization that seeks to revitalize the area within the 48214 zip code.

Operator Ezekiel Harris tells Eater that Detroit-based architecture firm Laavu (which also designed Gold Cash Gold, the former Cafe con Leche Nord location and Sister Pie) was brought on to come with the minimalist, yet stylish aesthetic.

For now, hours are 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday - Friday, 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Saturdays and 3 p.m.-9 p.m. Sundays.
