Dos Locos Tacos Fires Up the Grill in Hamtramck on Tuesday

Hamtramck’s casual new Mexican eatery Dos Locos Tacos is preparing to open its doors on Tuesday, February 13 inside the former Campau Tower space. The restaurant owned by partners Mike Petrack and partner Brittany Olmstead will feature the familiar diner layout with a fresh menu that eschews the burgers and hot dogs that have long ruled the location in favor of tacos, burritos, and quesadillas.

“There was talk of a Taco Bell [opening in the city] and people got excited, but that never happened,” Olmstead tells Eater. “So we wanted to go off of that and find something more authentic for the people of Hamtramck.”

Dos Locos’ menu is simple and designed to cater to both residents and late-night bar patrons, with plenty of halal and vegetarian options. The restaurant, for example, offers beef chorizo rather than pork as well as soyrizo and and seasoned black beans. Patrons looking for more traditional options can also look forward to marinated carne asada and stewed chicken. To drink there are plenty of choices ranging from Jaritos to horchata (with a possibility of horchata milkshakes come summer).

When possible, Olmstead and Petrack are working to source as many of their ingredients and menu items locally. The taco shop uses La Michoacana tortillas to make its tacos and puffy fried corn chips and brings in a rotating selection of vegetarian and meat tamales from Evie’s Tamales in Detroit’s Mexicantown neighborhood.

The salsas, including pico de gallo and spicy mango, are made fresh daily and while the guacamole is prepared fresh to-order. Additionally, Petrack tells Eater he’s aiming to build up a “badass hot sauce collection.” Customers can expect to see the full lineup of Chicago-based sauce maker Co-Op Sauce at the shop (a portion of the hot sauce sales go to support youth arts education).

As for the interior, Dos Locos Tacos doesn’t plan to make too many alterations. The menu boards will be printed rather than feature moveable letters like its predecessor. “We’re keeping it as is,” Olmstead says. “We’re adding some decoration, maybe a bit more flair to it, but structurally it will stay the same.” Dos Locos plans to open early on Tuesday and stay late for Paczki Day revelers to come in and check out the new restaurant. Take a peek at the food and the menu below.
