Beloved bottle shop 8 Degrees Plato Beer Company is closing its doors in Ferndale at the end of 2018. The popular destination for beer and Friday night tastings on the west side of downtown announced the closure on Saturday, November 10 in a lengthy message to Facebook. Plato will host its last Ferndale tasting on Friday, December 28.
Owner Tim Costello cited the stress of running multiple different stores as the primary reason for the closure:
As rewarding as owning and operating one store is, we now find ourselves with three, which means triple the rewards but the downside of triple the stress. There are still things that Brigid and myself want to accomplish as responsible business owners, members of our communities and more importantly as a couple for each other. We are looking forward to being able to do just that.
Costello and co-owner Brigid Beaubien opened the original 8 Degrees Plato shop in Ferndale more than seven years ago and followed it up with a second bottle shop and bar in Cass Corridor in September 2015. Last month, Beaubien debuted her new home furnishings and decor shop Urbānum in New Center.

The Ferndale location is set to close permanently on Monday, December 31. The Detroit location will thankfully continue to operate in Cass Corridor. While it's certainly a loss for beer fans in Ferndale, Costello suggests that another beer concept may be in the works for the building. “There will be someone pretty cool taking on the space and it will have beer involved,” he writes. “I am committed to making sure that they are set up and ready to go when the time is right.”
