A new cafe catering to cyclists and coffee fans is finally rolling into Woodbridge. Bikes & Coffee debuted on Friday, October 26, and after a weekend hiatus is opening for regular hours today at 1521 Putnam St.
Owner Benjamin Kehoe began developing his bicycle shop and cafe more than two years ago. Kehoe is running the day-to-day operations at the shop with help from general manager Derrick Busman. The pair will be slowly ramping up business over the next few weeks, adding new pastry and food items to their menus as well as putting the finishing touches on the interior.
The space features a centrally located, rectangular coffee bar with counters built by local skate park company Ramped Construction. Bikes & Coffee is currently serving pour-overs and espresso drinks made with Hyperion Coffee as well as teas. The shop is also offering bagels from Detroit Institute of Bagels. Busman says he and Kehoe are in talks with several vendors to potentially carry grab-and-go sandwiches, salads, and more pastries.
In addition to the caffeine, the space is also a full-service bike shop doing walk-in repairs and custom builds by appointment. “We will build bikes up for people by sourcing unique frames and finding them the parts through whatever wholesaler accounts that we already have set up,” Busman says.
Bikes & Coffee is one of the latest shops to open on the fast-developing corner of Trumbull and Putnam. Forthcoming tenants on the block include Japanese izakaya Katsu Detroit, a new location of Lucki’s Cheesecakes, and a “rock-and-roll” watering hole called Lexington Bar.
Bikes & Coffee is located at 1521 Putnam St.; open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. seven days a week.
