Avalon Cafe & Biscuit Bar is now open in New Center. The latest outpost of the popular Detroit-based bakery and cafe chain recently debuted inside the former Cafe Con Leche space on West Grand Boulevard.
Fans of the previous occupant will find the layout of the new 70-seat Avalon shop fairly familiar. A long counter runs in an L-shape along the back walls of the space. The blue and white tiles from Cafe Con Leche on the outside of the bar have been replaced by a bright yellow and orange polka dot pattern. Light fixtures attached to the floating white ceiling tiles are surrounded by whisks from industrial-sized mixers. The restaurant also features a painting of the original Willis Street Avalon Cafe above a row of banquette seats with black and white patterned upholstery. The shop offers outdoor seating in neighboring New Center Park.
Unlike other Avalon locations, the New Center shop is focused specifically on flaky biscuit sandwiches. Both breakfast and lunch are served all-day. Diners can expect items like smoked turkey, gouda, and apple butter biscuit sandwiches and breakfast biscuits topped with vegetarian sawmill gravy. There are also traditional sandwiches served on Avalon breads, plus coffee and espresso drinks. For something sweet, the shop is sourcing ice cream from Reilly Craft Creamery.
Avalon Cafe & Biscuit Bar is hosting its an official grand opening party from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. on September 7 with ice cream, Faygo floats, a $5 biscuit bar, family-friendly activities. All the proceeds from the event will go to benefit the Oakland Avenue Urban Farm.
Avalon Cafe & Biscuit Bar is located at 2990 West Grand Blvd. in Detroit; the cafe is open from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m.. Monday through Friday, 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturdays, and closed Sundays.
