A new Neapolitan pizzeria and cafe combo is on track to debut next Saturday, September 9, in Southwest Detroit. PizzaPlex, located at 4458 W Vernor Highway west of Clark Park, confirmed the opening date on social media late Thursday evening.
PizzaPlex describes itself as “a community pizzeria and events space.” The owners began introducing themselves to the neighborhood through pop-ups last summer and have spent the past year building out the space. The restaurant will feature a bar and coffee in addition to pizzas.
While several restaurants in Detroit offer Neapolitan-style pizzas, PizzaPlex plans to serve the real deal. Earlier this spring the PizzaPlex team brought in Naples, Italy-based Scuola di Pizzaiolo (Pizza School) founder Fabio Cristiano for a week of mentorship and consultation on the finer points of Neapolitan pizza making.
At the time, PizzaPlex also announced plans to maintain a relationship with Scuola di Pizzaiolo by facilitating a cultural exchange. PizzaPlex employees would have opportunities to travel to Naples for month-long pizza training exchanges while young Italian pizza makers could come to work at PizzaPlex and practice their English while learning about running a business abroad.
PizzaPlex will open from 8 a.m. to midnight during the launch.
