On Saturday, August 12, wholesome eating mainstay Detroit Vegan Soul will throw open the doors at its second outpost on the city’s west side.

Owners Kirsten Ussery and chef Erika Boyd opened their original restaurant location in West Village in the fall of 2013 serving a variety of soul food-inspired dishes such as BBQ tofu, “Catfish” tofu, smothered tempeh. Then, a little more than a year ago, the pair made the leap to building ownership by purchasing the former Blue Moon Ice Cream shop at 19614 Grand River Ave. Since then, the space has undergone a slow but steady transformation into a casual, sit-down establishment.

The 1,200-square-foot eatery will seat around 36 customers at banquette seating, four top tables, and stools near the front window. Both locations share a similar design color palette with dark woods, beiges, and bright green walls. The exterior of the building facing Detroit Vegan Soul’s dedicated parking lot also features a colorful plant mural. As Ussery told Eater earlier this year, the west side restaurant is expected to offer a slightly different menu from the original.

The opening event will feature a ribbon cutting beginning at 11:30 a.m. and the first 32 visitors will be provided with a ticket to eat at 1 p.m. The menu will be limited during the opening to three starters, three sandwiches, and three main courses. Carryout will not be available during the event. Regular hours will begin on August 17 with optional carryout ordering.

Photographers Chris and Michelle Gerard took a tour of the new Grandmont Rosedale restaurant ahead of its big weekend reveal. Take a look around in the gallery below.

Detroit Vegan Soul-West is located at 19614 Grand River Ave.; the restaurant will begin regular hours on August 17; the hours are noon to 8 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday. Website.
