Hotly anticipated new neighborhood brewer Urbanrest Brewing Co. is slated to arrive in Ferndale on June 30, according to Crain’s. The 65-seat taproom located on the east side of Ferndale in a former paint filter manufacturing facility will feature five Belgian-style farmhouse ales as well as several varieties of fermented kombucha tea and one soda.
Urbanrest practices “open fermentation” — a process in which the unfermented wort (sort of like a grain tea) is exposed to yeast in the environment rather than being inoculated by specific brewers yeast strains. Owners Zach and Mary Typinsky and Scott O’Keefe custom built their 15-barrel stainless steel brewing system with its rectangular open tanks using old dairy equipment. They also operate a small urban farm in Center Line where they grows hops.
In addition to serving beer in the taproom, Urbanrest will offer charcuterie boards prepared with cheeses, jams, and meats from nearby butcher shop Farm Field Table. The brewery is also expected to offer swing top growlers for taking beer to-go.
When it arrives at the end of the month, Urbanrest will join a robust community of Ferndale brewers including B. Nektar Meadery, Woodward Avenue Brewers, and Shcramm’s Mead. On the other side of town, Livernois Tap from Axle Brewing Co. debuted earlier this month with a full restaurant and biergarten.
