Reining domestic goddess and cheese slice thief Martha Stewart visited Detroit last week to speak at a women’s business owners conference at Cobo Center and carved out some time to eat, too. On her personal blog today, Stewart chronicled her whirlwind June 8 trip to the Motor City including stops at Astro Coffee and Detroit Institute of Bagels.
The professional perfectionist started with an early morning visit to Astro for a “delicious cappuccino” and a buttermilk scone that she pronounced “so tasty.” Stewart also praises the shop’s “incredibly friendly and efficient” staff. After the conference, Stewart returned to the trendy dining neighborhood for a pre-airport meal at Detroit Institute of Bagels — a spot that’s been featured on her website in the past.
Of course, Stewart wasn’t just in town to eat and orate. She also dropped by Pewabic Pottery to check out the ceramics and admired the Anna Scripps Whitcomb Conservatory on Belle Isle from afar. “I hope to stop here on my next visit to Detroit,” she writes of the glass building.
The Corktown stops aren’t particularly surprising. The neighborhood southwest of downtown boasts loads of restaurants and is a popular among travelers and celebrities including chef Mario Batali and fellow Astro Coffee fan Hillary Clinton.
