Bon Bon Bon bid farewell to its original, pint-sized Hamtramck storefront this weekend after a Saturday sendoff. The crew behind the nationally acclaimed chocolate company is in the process of settling into larger digs in a building at 11360 Joseph Campau Ave. and will reopen to the public this summer. The Fort Street retail outlet in downtown Detroit will remain open throughout the transition.
Bon Bon Bon founder Alexandra Clark launched her artisan chocolate business inside the space at 2756 Evaline St. in Hamtramck in 2014 and it quickly became a hit. The shop opened on Saturdays only and spent the rest of the week crafting bons and filling mail orders. Less than two years later, with a second location in Detroit’s Chrysler House Building, Bon Bon Bon confirmed that it was moving to bigger digs in Hamtramck.
Clark purchased the 5,000-square-foot building on Joseph Campau in February 2016 for $110,000. Around 3,000 feet on the ground floor are being converted into the new shop with a production kitchen, retail space, and room for private events.
In a message on social media, Clark thanked fans who came out to say goodbye to the Evaline Street shop on its last day of business. “To make the worst chocolatier pun ever, it was so ‘bittersweet’,” she writes. “Moving to a new shop, in a cool old building that we own, in a town that we love is a dream you made come true! Thank you, all of you, for everything you contribute — good people deserve good chocolate and you all are so damn good that it keeps the bar sky high!”
The grand opening is slated to take place on July 19 and a new spring flower-inspired collection of chocolates is in the works. Stay tuned for more updates.
