The newest outlet for dough-cooking Detroit favorite Avalon International Breads is preparing to land in just a couple of days — on Friday April 14. Avalon Cafe & Bakery will be on the corner of Woodward and State streets near Campus Martius.
It’s the latest in a string of expansions for the 20-year-old bakery, known for its community support and generally being a great employer. They added an airport location, an Ann Arbor restaurant, and a cafe at its bakehouse all relatively recently.
The new downtown location is pretty big news for Avalon — it’s in some ways an all-purpose spot, with coffee, plenty of grab-and-go options, but also a dine-in area.
While the space isn’t open yet, the cafe-bakery has been practicing on friends and family — that means a few early glimpses inside are now available, courtesy of some very sharing pals of Avalon — check it out, complete with a large Spirit of Detroit mural with bread in hand.
