American Coney Island Unleashes Coney-Paczki Hybrid of Nightmares

This may be a step too far

Fat Tuesday is tomorrow, folks. In Detroit that means a day to revel in Mardi Gras mania by consuming sugar and fat-laden pillows of Polish fried dough known as the paczki, by the dozen. It’s an annual tradition and downtown icon American Coney Island is ready to join in this year in perhaps the most Detroit way possible.

Gaze now, dear readers, at the Coney paczki — a disturbing mashup wherein a steamed hot dog bun is traded for sweet, glazed Polish pastry. A hot dog and of course the signature loose chili, chopped white onions and stripe of mustard is layered on top. This may be a step to far.

American Coney Island owner Grace Keros tells Deadline Detroit that she and a few brave souls tested the recipe last year and are finally ready unleash it on the masses for Paczki Day 2017. “Think about it — you eat pancakes with syrup and bacon or sausage, so why not this?” Rest assured, the paczki vessel for the Coneys will not feature any fillings. They’ll be available on February 28 for $4.65 a piece.

Not game for a Coney paczki? Metro Detroit offers plenty of innovations on the traditional fruit and custard flavors.
