Connoisseurs of fine cheese and chocolate can now enjoy both in one place with the opening of Provisions retail shop at 1030 Woodward Heights in Ferndale. While a grand opening takes place Saturday, customers can stop in now and find a deli case stocked with 40 varieties of American and imported cheeses and a selection of “small batch and beans to bar chocolate,” Eater confirms with co-founder William Werner.

Behind the sweet and savory venture are Werner and Zach Berg, childhood friends who each bring with them expertise in each specialty product.

Werner comes from a background in geology, but became fascinated with all aspects of chocolate when he took a managing job at Gayle’s Chocolates in Royal Oak. Meanwhile, Berg cut his teeth in the culinary world at 13 working in kosher catering. He took second place in the Winter Cheesemonger Invitational in 2014 and managed the cheese department at Bi-Rite Market in San Francisco.

The store — which shares space with Farm Field Table — also offers a limited selection of charcuterie and pre-cut party platters and will possibly sell other accompaniments like olive oil.

The duo also have ambitions to expand to Detroit. To get started, they’ve secured a $5,000 grant from TechTown’s retail bootcamp.
