More than a year in the making, a new coffee shop called Detroit Sip will make its official entrance on Saturday in Northwest Detroit. The cafe represents an effort by owner Jevona Watson to bring a comfortable neighborhood gathering space to her community in the Bagley neighborhood.
Detroit Sip is located at 7420 W McNichols Rd. between University of Detroit-Mercy and Marygrove College. Although the nearby storefronts are largely vacant at present, the strip is slowly attracting new businesses such as Watson’s back to the area. A co-working space and co-op pre-school called Detroit Parent Collective opened nearby in October and local community group, Live6 Alliance, recently pitched a new community center called Treehouse Detroit. More businesses are also in the works.
For her part, Watson hopes to tap into the local business and student community by offering a place to gather and work. The shop seats roughly 40 patrons and features a small, six-seat conference room that’s outfitted with audio visual hookups and a TV for displaying presentations.
On the menu, Detroit Sip will serve hot and chilled coffee and espresso drinks made with beans from Germack and Ashe Supply Co. alongside teas, hot cocoa, and doughnuts from Dutch Girl Donuts. Watson also plans to showcase products from small businesses that may not have their own storefronts starting with a pop-up market during Small Business Saturday on November 25.
Photographers Chris and Michelle Gerard took a tour of Detroit Sip ahead of the official opening. Take a peek inside the contemporary cafe in the gallery below.
