Southwest Detroit’s new bar and music venue El Club is stepping up its food game in 2017 with a new dining series. Representatives for El Club tell Eater that in-house pizza slinger Pepe Z is working with local and national culinary talent on the monthly, ticketed pop-up events.
The first round of dinners is scheduled to take place on January 23 and January 24, featuring Southwest Detroit chef and neighbor George Azar of Flowers of Vietnam. Azar and Pepe Z’s Matt Ziolkowksi are still working out details of the menu, but we’re told it will include four courses with dishes like lamb chops, meatballs, gnocchi, soup, and (of course) pizza. El Club will also host pop-ups with Dr. Sushi and Los Angeles-based vegan chef Clara Cakes in February and Sister Pie’s Lisa Ludwinski in March.
Tickets for the Pepe Z-Flowers of Vietnam mashup are $35 per person. It might be one of your last chances to taste some of George Azar’s cooking this winter. Flowers of Vietnam is expected to temporarily shutter very soon for renovations and Azar will be taking a notable leave of absence to work with the world-class culinary team from Noma during its highly publicized Mexico pop-up. The restaurant is slated to return in July.
