Beginning September 28, Japanese concept SuperHappySushi will take over the menu at MOCAD’s Cafe 78 full-time. The pop-up developed by the Detroit Optimist Society restaurant group in partnership with chef Rob Lee (formerly sushi chef for Townhouse Detroit) launched in August as a once a week event. Things have gone well over the past two months partner Dave Kwiatkowski tells Eater, and the group decided Lee’s restaurant could sub in for the museum cafe and bar’s regular menu.
SuperHappySushi will begin soft openings this weekend while the restaurant gets a feel for how much food to order and will jump into regular business hours on Wednesday. Cafe 78 will no longer offer its coffee and pastry service, but diners can expect sit-down dining as well as grab-and-go sushi options. The bar menu will feature classic and original cocktails, beer, and sake.
The MOCAD space won’t be the final destination for SuperHappySushi. A 2,400-square-foot brick-and-mortar restaurant is in the works with an estimated mid-2017 debut. After the move, Cafe 78 may return to its earlier form or take on something new. “We’ll see what happens,” he says. Take a peek at the updated menu below.
