Detroit-based food truck Norma G's is finally making the leap from rolling kitchen and catering outfit to full-fledged restaurant. Crain’s reports that the Caribbean mobile eatery owned by Lester Gouvia is slated to open a brick-and-mortar restaurant in the Jefferson Chalmers neighborhood near Grosse Pointe Park.
The restaurant will be located in the Jefferson East Inc. building at 14700 East Jefferson Avenue. The building is currently undergoing a $1 million renovation and construction on the restaurant is expected to start this fall.
Gouvia launched his food truck in 2015, after hosting regular pop-ups and catering events around town. The business was named after Gouvia’s mother and drew on his Trinidadian roots with dishes like jerk chicken sliders, curry, and mac and cheese. Last summer, Norma G’s entered the Hatch Detroit contest and made it to the final round with Gouvia’s pitch for a sit-down restaurant.
