Beloved Hamtramck dive bar and favorite haunt for local actors 7 Brothers Bar is shuttering July 15, according to Metro Times. Owner George Cvetanovski plans to retire after 39 years operating the watering hole, which is a go-to drinking spot for actors and patrons of the Planet Ant Theater. Cvetonovski's retirement was announced in early May via social media.
Over the years, Cvetonovski has considered closing or selling the bar, but in a recent interview with Model D the owner credited comedian Keegan-Michael Key (Key and Peele, Keanu) with keeping the business alive and solidifying its relationship with Planet Ant. "I definitely would have sold the bar if not for the theater people," he told writer Aaron Mondry. Today, Key's headshot along with those of many other Metro Detroit-grown actors hang on the walls. While 7 Brothers is shuttering, the bar's legacy will likely live on in some capacity. Planet Ant is currently arranging to purchase the building and its liquor license.
