After a little over a month of soft openings, ASHE Supply Co. is officially open in downtown Detroit's M@dison Building. The café and retail shop replaces Crane's on Broadway, which shuttered in November. ASHE focuses on small batch, house roasted coffees and currently offers Nicaraguan, Kenyan, Ethiopian, and El Salvadoran beans.
The owners focus on third wave brewing methods including pourovers, Chemex, and siphon coffee as well as classic espresso drinks co-owner AJ Nichols tells Eater. ASHE offers mochas made with local purveyor Pete's Chocolate and will eventually feature a house made syrup for flavored lattes. In addition to coffee, patrons can get cookies, pastries, and bagels at the shop from Sister Pie, Avalon International Breads, and Detroit Institute of Bagels.
While the 30-seat shop isn't quite large enough for a kitchen, Nichols plans to start using the espresso machine in creative ways. Within the next two weeks he'll introduce several egg dishes to ASHE's menu such as the "Egg Latte" served in a coffee mug with Calder Dairy eggs steamed with veggies and herbs sourced from Eastern Market. Steam from the espresso machine makes the eggs "super fluffy and airy" says Nichols. He plans to offer an open face egg bagel sandwich.
ASHE began as a "handcrafted lifestyle brand" and continue to offer goods inside the shop and on its website. Nichols says they've recently expanded their line of products to include coffee-infused goods like candles, beard balm, and beard oil. Photographers Chris and Michelle Gerard visited ASHE to check out the revamped space. Take a tour in the gallery below.
ASHE Supply Co. is open 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Friday; 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday; and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday. The shop has wifi and is expected to upgrade to Rocket Fiber very soon.
