This might be the most important revelation from WikiLeaks’ latest dump of Hillary Clinton campaign emails: a Clinton aide chose Lafayette Coney Island over American. According to The Detroit News, hidden among Clinton’s speeches to Wall Street executives and political strategizing is a flattering review of venerable downtown dog slinger Lafayette Coney Island.
Buried in an email exchange with Clinton campaign chair John Podesta discussing Clinton’s well-publicized visits to Detroit and Flint in March, spokesman Nick Merrill enthusiastically recommends visiting the downtown Detroit diner:
On a personal note, I just had two Coney Island hot dogs at the famous Lafayette Coney Island next to the hotel. I highly recommend. Bring your defibrillator, or ask to borrow one from USSS.
How this truly shocking alliance with Lafayette will impact the election remains to be seen. The Clinton camp have been big supporters of Detroit restaurants on the campaign trail, with HRC making a stop at Kuzzo’s Chicken & Waffles in March and Bill Clinton touring West Village’s many cafes and restaurants. Clinton had also previously paid a visit to Sweet Potato Sensations in Old Redford and lent her support to Detroit’s fast food workforce during a “Fight for 15” convention.
Of course, this isn’t the first time WikiLeaks has touched the food world. This most recent hack provided a window into the secret of Podesta’s creamy risotto recipe. A past email dump also gave Americans a behind the scenes look at the White House’s decision to cancel an Ariana Grande performance over her infamous doughnut-licking incident. Truly scandalous.
