Detroit's wine lovers may be battling one serious hangover come summer. Another wine bar, shop, and community event space called The Royce Detroit has officially found a home in The Kales Building. Owned by Angela Rutherford and Ping Ho, The Royce Detroit first made an appearance during last summer's Comerica Hatch Detroit competition, where they were finalists in the running for the $50,000 grand prize. A representative for the shop tells Eater that Ho and Rutherford have submitted an application to the most recent round of the Motor City Match program to assist with funding for the buildout.

The Kales Building has a tricky history with ground floor retail tenants. Shield's Pizza spent years working on a custom space in the building before abandoning the project. Then in 2015, the building's management evicted Mo Better Blues following a protracted legal dispute. Still, the Grand Circus Park-adjacent space could prove a prime location for the right business with regular foot traffic from building tenants as well as sports and entertainment events.
