Last night chef James Rigato hosted his inaugural soft opening service at Mabel Gray. The Hazel Park restaurant is slated to open to the public next week, but Eater's photographers got a first-look ahead of the anticipated debut. Rigato describes the Ron & Roman-designed space as "old meets new." A white vinyl banquette is juxtaposed against distressed walls embellished with small paintings. Artist Greg Oberle's mural representing Diana of the Dunes, a legend inspired by a woman named Alice Mabel Gray, is displayed above the back bar. These sorts loving details are peppered throughout the restaurant's landscape giving the former Coney Island an intimate feel. Diners can expect a seasonally inspired menu highlighting foraged ingredients and whole animal butchery. Stay tuned for an official opening date.
