Detroit indie rapper Icewear Vezzo's Chicken Talk — a restaurant offering carry-out chicken, ribs, and steak — debuted Wednesday on the east side, Metro Times reports. The kitchen, headed by Vezzo's partner Jermeryl Smith, churns out fried chicken seasoned with a choice of "garlic, and parmesan, buffalo lemon pepper, Asian chili, or hot boy fire sauce; St. Louis-style ribs; chicken and waffles; catfish; and steak bites featuring Delmonico steak."
The recipes are partially inspired Smith's grandmother's Mississippi Southern cooking, he tells the Times. Smith got his in the kitchens at The Rattlesnake Club and developed his chicken wing recipe while working at several other restaurants around the city. He shops at Eastern Market daily for meat with an eye for quality, adding that he and Vezzo want to bring better food options into the neighborhood and, eventually, to more locations around Detroit. "There ain't no attention out here [on the east side], we get all the worst attention about the shootings," Vezzo says. "I want tourists to want to come and try our food and say that it's the best chicken they've ever had."
Chicken Talk is open daily from 11 a.m. to 9:30 p.m.
