"We underestimated the demand for what we do, and we grew too quickly and were unable to keep up with Health Department codes for space for cooking," chef Garrett Lipar told The Detroit Free Press in an article updated late Friday evening. The restaurant served its final tasting menu Saturday.

The partners made their decision to close on Thursday morning and Lipar notified the staff that evening, adding: "The mood was obviously very emotional." Lipar says he isn't sure what the future holds for himself or Torino, though they have discussed relocating throughout the past year. "We'll take the next couple of weeks to assess everything." Updated, 06/09, 1:59 p.m.: Owner Noah Dorfman clarifies to The Detroit News that the Oakland County Health Department decided their kitchen did not have enough cold storage space. "There were two decisions, in their opinion. We could dumb down our menu and pre-make our food, which was something we did not agree with," or the restaurant could close. Dorfman also denies some rumors that chef Garrett Lipar and beverage director Ian Redmond weren't getting along ("Our relationship is stronger than ever.") and notes that the restaurant was deemed exceptionally clean.
