Livernois Avenue's Good Cakes and Bakes is bringing ice cream to The Avenue of Fashion this weekend, co-owner April Anderson tells Eater. This Saturday, 10 ice cream flavors will debut at the bakery including an exclusive flavor, Lemon Gooey Butter Cake, created in collaboration with Treat Dreams.
Anderson says the bakery pitched their idea for ice cream at a PowerMoves@Detroit Tech Week competition in April and was awarded the $10,000 grand prize. Prior to Treat Dreams opening in Midtown, Anderson explains, there were a scant few ice cream parlors in the city. "Over $250,000 leaves Detroit every year because there's no places to get ice cream in the city of Detroit," she says. With the expansion, Good Cakes and Bakes hopes to keep some of that money within city limits..
Of the 10 flavors, eight will come from Treat Dreams and another two from Ray's in Royal Oak. The shop's ice creams will be offered year round. To kick-off the summer season, the bakery is throwing an ice cream social this Saturday with $1 scoops, live DJs, food, and face painting.
Later this summer, the neighborhood is expected to receive a pop-up beer garden and brunch at the former Hunter's Supper Club.
