New projects loom on the horizon for Michele Mojica Bezue, owner of the SWEET Artisan Marshmallows brand. Bezue tells Eater that she's venturing out in a new direction under the name Detroit Marshmallow Co. and is securing funding to build a new kitchen/retail location on Mack Avenue.
Bezue opened SWEET Confections Boutique last fall, only to leave the property in January due to conflicts with building management. Since then, she has operated a wholesale and pop-up business from the kitchens at Higher Grounds coffee house. Starting over again has been a challenge, but the confectioner says she continues to be overwhelmed by the community's support and the continued growth of her brand. "It's nice to have so many votes of confidence . . . Everything happens for a reason."
Bezue says that she wasn't initially looking to secure a new space so soon. However, she stumbled across the small Mack Avenue location and is certain it will suit Detroit Marshmallow Co.'s needs. She envisions the space as home base for her growing wholesale business that opens once a week for retail or by appointment. She expects to sign a lease on July 1 and complete the build-out by August in time for the holiday season.
"It's nice to have so many votes of confidence."
For now, Bezue is focused on fundraising and is asking fans to support her crowdfunding campaign. Leaving behind her previous shop also meant abandoning many of her investments in the building and equipment. Money from the campaign will go towards her equipment budget.
In the meantime, find company's marshmallows at Parker Street Market, Germack, Socratea, Corktown Farmers Market, EliTea, Higher Grounds, and, soon, Plum Market.
