Jane Slaughter cuts into Sweet Lorraine's Fabulous Mac n' Cheez!: "If I had two words of advice . . . they would be 'more cheese.' And make it sharper," Slaughter writes. Special toppings don't make up for the lack of cheesy flavor, though the critic does admire owner Lorraine Platman's ability to remix traditional sandwiches into mac & cheese form. "In the Twisted Grilled Cheez, a brioche is stuffed with mac and cheese. It's not Paula Deen's hamburger patty between two doughnuts, but it's a cousin. (One dissenter rants about such genre-hopping: ‘Pick a lane, taco pie. Stop waffling, waffle sandwich.')" Slaughter concludes: "I realize that deconstruction is the fad of the moment, but it's not always a happy one." [Metro Times]

Molly Abraham applauds Bacco Ristorante: Southfield's Bacco Ristorante celebrated its 13th Anniversary this month and recently unveiled a "lighter, brighter contemporary look," Abraham writes. Chef Luciano Del Signore's menu requires no updates and doesn't hold back at lunch. "With the exception of the lunchtime burger, guests can get a real sense of the kitchen's expertise any time of day." The house's "insistence on quality" earns the restaurant four stars. Lori Wild brunches at Bosco: Bosco may have "the best Benny in Metro Detroit," Wild writes. "It was delicious. It's incredible what happens when you combine fresh ingredients and locally sourced swine." The critic also recommends the Ferndale eatery's patio and "beautiful" staff. Wild isn't a fan of the pulp accompanying the freshly squeezed juice in her mimosa but gives the restaurant 4.5 out of 5 stars anyway. [Hell Yeah Detroit]
