Sadly, no Detroit chefs will clinch coveted James Beard Awards this year. Finalists were announced today and not a single Detroit name made the cut.
Local semi-finalists for Best Chef in the Great Lakes category included chef Andy Hollyday of Selden Standard and chef Mark Djozlija of Wright & Co., while chef Garrett Lipar of Torino in Ferndale was nominated for the Rising Star Award. Four out of five of this year's Great Lakes finalists herald from Chicago.
Despite the snub, it's still a huge honor for any Detroit-based chefs to make the semi-finals. The last time a Detroit chef made it that far was in 1993, according to Thrillist, when chef Jimmy Schmidt of The Rattle Snake Club won a James Beard. There's always next year.
