Valentine's Day is the time of year when supermarkets fill with all manner of cheesy heart shaped chocolate boxes, cookies, and cakes. All are decorated in red or pink, and sometimes covered with horrible glitter. Even worse, there's often no knowing what sort of delicious or cardboard-like substance fills each chocolate's mystery center. Fortunately, Detroit has plenty of local and certified satisfactory places that are still taking orders (though not for too much longer) for chocolates and other baked delights.
Hamtramck chocolatier Bon Bon Bon has an assortment of chocolates to choose from with tongue-in-cheek flavors like S & M (strawberries and mascarpone cream ganache), Black Like My Heart (Dutch processed cocoa truffle), and Bitter Bitch (Preserved lemon white chocolate ganache, black currant confiture, and candied preserved lemon). Owner Alexandra Clark is taking orders through the end of the day.
Fresh off a weekend dance break bender, Sister Pie is accepting orders through 5 p.m. today for rose pistachio and other florally flavored shortbreads. The bakery is also making Red Hot Chocolate pies with bittersweet chocolate and cayenne.
Traveling purveyor Pete's Chocolate Co. is popping up around town this week with his signature selection of truffles and hot cocoa. Pick up a box at the Pot & Box VLNTNSDYMRKT (figure that one out) from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. Friday, Friday evening at 8 Degrees Plato in Ferndale, or at Eastern Market on Saturday.
Chez Chloe lava cakes now has a permanent location in Treat Dreams for the perfect ice cream and fudgy, delicious cake pairing. Chloe will also be at Eastern Market on Saturday.
SWEET Artisan Marshmallows is offering aphrodisiac-inspired fluffcakes in five different flavors alongside other marshmallow treats at Higher Grounds coffee house.
