So long Crane's on Broadway. The bar/café combo operated by a Dan Gilbert-hired food company has moved out to make way for another downtown third wave coffee and apparel shop called ASHE Supply Co. Founded by AJ Nichols and Mike Kennedy, ASHE Supply Co.'s café will offer small batch, house-roasted coffee as well as pastries from local vendors and open faced egg sandwiches. In addition pour-overs, espresso drinks, and other brewing methods, the team plans to serve cold brew coffee on tap, with nitro options.
Nichols tells Eater that he and his partner worked with Bedrock Real Estate for nearly a year before settling on the M@dison Building spot. The duo is currently working independently to build-out the space. Nichols says that café will draw some inspiration from motorcycle culture for an overall "steampunk, moto, industrial" aesthetic. The pair are retaining Crane's curved coffee bar, but with updates like a rough, red stained wood base. The space will seat between 20 and 30 customers at a mixture of window seats, long communal tables, and four tops. "The biggest goal for this is we make sure that this space extremely comfortable to absolutely anybody and everybody," he adds. "This going to be a community spot."
The owners rather ambitiously expect to soft open in the next two weeks, with an official debut after the New Year. In the meantime the company is on the lookout for a few good baristas to join its ranks. Stay tuned.
