A metro area bar is getting its moment in the spotlight this week on Spike TV's Bar Rescue. In late August the crew filmed at Dearborn Heights dive The Hooch and asked yours truly and Metro Times dining editor Serena Maria Daniels to participate. Like most bars featured on the show, The Hooch was struggling to make ends meet, in part, due to a poor reputation. Prior to filming it sported a meagre two stars on Yelp.
During the taping, Daniels and I posed as customers and sat at the bar, providing commentary through hidden microphones. In Sunday's episode, titled "Vulgar Vixens," The Hooch undergoes a full rebranding to become Proving Ground Bar & Grill. Watch as the show's no-nonsense host Jon Taffer confronts owner Chandra Phillips about the degrading way she speaks to her all-female staff in the clip above.
Bar Rescue airs at 10 p.m. this Sunday. The Proving Ground is hosting a viewing party beginning at 7 p.m.
