Metro Detroit has no shortage of Mediterranean restaurants, but that isn't stopping Chicago-based chain Falafill from opening its first franchise in Detroit's Midtown neighborhood. The fast-casual joint is set to open this month in a 1,200-square-foot space formerly home to GourMet Fresh Xpress at 4206 Woodward Ave, Crain's reports.

The franchise, owned by Forever Brands, was started in 2009. "I was hesitant at first, from what you hear of Detroit being empty," executive chef Maher Chebaro tells Crain's. "But I paid a visit for a friend, and the energy is amazing. It's a market I like: young people with an aptitude for rebuilding. There's an energy you can't find in every city."

The menu follows a typical fast food sandwich format. Customers select from a variety of fillings including classic chickpea fritters, curry falafel, steak, turkey or chicken, or spicy sujuk sausage. They then can choose whether to eat their meal in a pita, bowl, or a wrap form. The restaurant also offers a host of sides including soup, pita chips, different types of fries, and more.

The company has not announced an official opening date, but teased this photo on Instagram over the weekend of the restaurant's interior.
