Birmingham's newest spot for high tea, The Mad Hatter, opened its doors last September. While the whimsical Alice in Wonderland theme had the potential to be over done, this tea bar manages to pay homage to the classic tale without going overboard.

Photographers Michelle and Chris Gerard provide an inside look at The Mad Hatter's fanciful décor from the doorknobs to the plush red upholstery. Patterned walls, clocks, mirrors, and cards are enough to satisfy the Queen of Hearts as well as the casual visitor.

Open daily for lunch, afternoon tea, and dinner, the bistro also offers a Sunday brunch option. In addition to an assortment of small plates, salads, entrees, and, of course, teas, the Hatter has a full menu of "potions, prescriptions, and elixers," to cure one's cocktail craving. Wines are offered by the bottle and the glass at varying price points. The café also provides a kid-friendly menu for the youthful crowd.

The Mad Hatter is open 11 a.m. to 1 a.m. Monday through Saturday and 10 a.m. to 1 a.m. on Sundays at 185 N. Old Woodward Ave.
