Detroit Bartenders Get to Take a Seat at the Bar

Anyone who's worked in the service industry knows there are too few days off in this business. But Sandy Levine, owner of The Oakland Art Novelty Co. in Ferndale, is doing just that to recognize the third anniversary of the popular speak-easy Aug. 26. Guest bartenders from Roast, Sugar House and former Oakland staffers will sub in that night, creating their own versions of an Old Fashioned and to give current employees a night to kick back.

It's been a big three years for The Oakland. Earlier this year, Esquire magazine recognized the Ferndale cocktail bar one of the best in the country. Oakland bartender Shane (Bang) McGrath was named one of America's Top 25 bartenders in America by The Daily Meal. McGrath was also named best bartender by yours truly, Eater Detroit, in its 2013 Eater Awards. Truly, all milestones in and of themselves.

The third anniversary takes place 6-11 p.m. Aug. 26. $3 drink specials will rotate through the night.
