An explosion rocked the 2000 block of 7 Mile at 2:00 a.m. this morning, and Jack's Coney Island was completely reduced to rubble. The Detroit News reports that the coney was closed when the incident took place, and the surrounding buildings were undamaged as crews turned off the gas to prevent additional problems.

This is the latest in a string of recent disasters, including the loss of local favorite Howell's Bar in Dearborn, and a small fire above PJ's Lager House in Corktown, which sadly claimed the tenants' pet cat.

The cause of the fire and explosion is under investigation, which is normal. It doesn't seem that any foul play is currently suspected.

The fate of the coney is currently unclear, according to the Detroit News article, owner Jack Nuculaj has yet to make a decision:

"We've been here since 1988," said Nuculaj, 56, of Novi. "It's 100 percent destroyed. I don't know what to do next. I don't know if I will rebuild. It's too early to tell."

However, closure seems the most likely scenario as the building, listed as a "Commericial Property" has been for sale on Trulia for at least 6 months.
