Mad Hatter, a new bistro, tea room, and bar is opening soon in Birmingham in the old Quizno's location. With bold Alice in Wonderland decor, it's hard to miss the new sign (and doors) of Downtown Birmingham's newest restaurant, and that appears to be the point. They hope to bring something unique to the area, high tea, in addition to bistro fare and alcohol.

They sought a "coveted bistro liquor license" at the end of last year, as executive chef Eileen Sako, who co-owns the restaurant with her husband, says in Downtown Publications that high tea is often accompanied by champagne or a mimosa. On Yelp, they describe themselves as "A truly unique Bistro, Bar, and Tea Room offering a wonderland of new American cuisine with a globally inspired touch." They are planning to have affordable prices, and to serve children's teas and men's teas (with oysters) in addition to regular high tea. The kid-friendly menu seems to be a recent trend in Birmingham, started by new restaurant The Bird & The Bread, no doubt because of increased demand.

They were anticipating a spring opening according to Metromode, but a tipster reported yesterday that the interior appears to still be under construction. A platform for outdoor seating does appear complete, though tables and chairs are still absent. However, as things tend to move a lot quicker in Birmingham than they do in Detroit, they could easily be opening very soon.
