Congratulations to the two Michigan semifinalists in the James Beard Foundation Awards "Best Chef: Great Lakes" category, Chef Myles Anton of Trattoria Stella in Traverse City, and Chef Brian Polcyn of Forest Grill in Birmingham. Raise a glass as well to "Rising Star Chef" semifinalist Eli Sussman, who currently works in Brooklyn but was born and raised in Detroit (he and his brother, Max, who was previously nominated for the same award, just published a cookbook together).
This is a huge competition, and these are only the semifinalists, so the competition is far from over. Eater National notes that the list will be narrowed down quite a bit more in the coming weeks:
"The finalists will be announced on Tuesday, March 18, 2014; the winners will then be announced at the James Beard Foundation Awards on Monday, May 5, 2014 at Lincoln Center in New York City."
Eater National has the full list with each category and it's worth a read, especially when planning places to check out while traveling (nothing like a destination meal). Well done Chef Anton, Chef Polcyn, and Chef Sussman, thank you for showing that Michigan can run with the best.
